Last week, I wrote about the need to work, work, work. This week, I’m talking about the other end of the spectrum: the need to rest.

According to The Importance of Rest for Runners at, one of the biggest mistakes new runners make is not taking enough down time to rest and recover. (I’m sure you could replace “new runners” with any new exercise, not just running.) With proper training, our bodies can do amazing things like lifting heavy weights or running marathons. But every proper training plan will include days of rest. The article says that elite runners who run for a living know the importance of rest days. They usually take one week off after a 5K, and up to two weeks off after completing a marathon. It’s generally recommended to take a day off after weightlifting with a certain muscle group.
